Soundcrash present Theon Cross
Hailed by Gilles Peterson as “incredible”, Theon Cross and his swaggering Tuba Bass is one of the stand-out acts of London’s flourishing young jazz scene.
Based in London, Cross holds his own as an impeccable talent, having worked widely across the generic spectrum with musicians including Moses Boyd, Jon Batiste, Emeli Sande and Kano. Perhaps most well known as part of the award-winning four-piece Sons of Kemet, Cross draws from these energetic and game-changing performances in all his work, composing and playing the tuba with an effervescent inventiveness which distinguishes him as a truly remarkable musician.
His debut solo release Aspirations was hailed as one of the most impactful of 2015, resulting in two nominations for Best Instrumentalist of the year (Jazz Fm Awards 2016) and Best Jazz Newcomer (Parliamentary Awards 2016). He has also cemented his role as a leading force of the London jazz scene by being included on We Out Here, a compilation showcasing the very finest of the young UK jazz, released on Peterson’s inimitable Brownswood imprint.
In both his performance and his composition, he challenges preconceptions on the versatility of the Tuba, bringing the funk with his exuberant style. Artfully crafting a distinct blend of classic New Orleans Jazz with a contemporary sound, Cross’ impact on the flourishing jazz scene is indisputable. Theon Cross’ performances are consistently dynamic and this event offers a unique opportunity to experience an evening of fluid yet boisterous jazz from one of London’s finest musicians.
